6 steps to creating the perfect content plan in ContentCal

ContentCal was created as a way to simplify the entire process of content creation from start to finish. Here at ContentCal, we consider planning your content to be an essential part of social media marketing - one that can save time, reduce stress and enable you to create better quality content.

Let’s take a look at how you can use ContentCal to nail your content plan

Step 1: Custom Planning Channels

ContentCal’s Custom Planning Channels can be used to plan for any content you want, transforming your Calendar into a complete marketing hub. While ContentCal is currently integrated with social media platforms Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn, ContentCal’s Custom Planning Channels allow you to add extra sections for content including emails, blogs, newsletters, and more.

Custom Planning Channels can be created in the ‘Setup’ section of your Calendar.

Step 2: Category Tags

Category Tags are essentially little colour coded labels you can add to your posts. These can be used to label content with their content theme, assign posts to members of your team to work on, or to mark the status of the post such as ‘on hold’ or ‘needs image’. Category Tags can be created in the ‘Setup’ section of your Calendar.

Step 3: Calendar Notes

When viewing your Calendar in ContentCal, you’ll notice a section at the top, above all Channels where you can leave notes on particular dates. This section is great for leaving notes to remind you about key dates such as ‘National Talk Like A Pirate Day’ or about events in your industry.

You can add Calendar Notes by selecting the Notes section above your social media channels.

Step 4: The Pinboard

The Pinboard is an area on the lefthand side of your [Content Calendar](/platform-features/products/publish/ Title="Content Calendar") that can be used for dropping notes, leaving information, or even for storing drafted content. Minimise and maximise the Pinboard by selecting the ‘...’ option beside the option for List View. We have written a nice blog on using the Pinboard.

You can drag or drop content from the Calendar to the Pinboard, and visa versa. You can also add Pinboard content by selecting the ‘Add new post’ button, leaving the date/time fields blank.

Step 5: Campaigns (not available on the Hobbyist Plan)

At the top of your ContentCal Calendar, you’ll notice a section named ‘Campaigns’. Within this section, you can create a [Campaign Folder](/blog/4-fantastic-ways-use-contentcals-campaign-folders/ title="Campaign Folders") to begin planning for upcoming social media campaigns by adding links, briefs, and ideas. This folder will be visible to all other Users of the Calendar allowing for collaboration. Entering the start and end dates of the Campaign will also create a Campaign Ribbon to appear within the Calendar view, ensuring the campaign is considered when content is created.

The Campaigns area can be accessed from the top of your Calendar. Select ‘+ New Campaign’ to get started.

Step 6: Draft posts

Let your imagination flow with ContentCal’s Draft posts. Begin creating content, to come back to later, or simply drop notes and ideas in the Calendar to turn into scheduled content at a later date. Draft posts will not be published to your social media channels.

Create a Draft post by hovering over the Calendar, selecting “+ New post’. Add copy and media and then press ‘Add post’. Draft posts will appear in the Calendar with a blue ribbon.

Well, well, consider yourself ready to start creating high-quality social media content. Remember, if you ever want to check on your progress, you can switch between Weekly and Monthly View at the top left of your Calendar.
