Twitter trending: What is it and how to get in on the action

What’s the trending section on your Twitter account all about? What makes it tick? How can you use the Twitter trending section to your advantage? All is to be revealed.

What’s it all about?

You may have noticed the random assortment of keywords, phrases and hashtags along the left-hand side of your Twitter homepage. This right here is the Twitter trending section. Anything on this list has a high volume of people are tweeting about it.

Click any of the items in the list to search the trending item and find out what the commotion is all about. This section can often be a great source for discovering news that is popular amongst your network as well as providing content inspiration and opportunities to engage with new connections.

The trends that appear for you personally are automatically dictated by who you follow and your location, but you can change this by selecting ‘change’ at the top of the trending section. Twitter trending 2

You’ll come to realise that certain trends are recurring such as #motivationmonday, #throwbackthursday and #FridayFeeling. You can also assume that certain occasions like #ChristmasDay or #PancakeDay might also make it into the Twitter trending section and many companies take this into account when content planning.

As a result, it’s pretty simple to take a guess at future trends and create some content for these trending topics ahead of schedule. This can save you quite a bit of time, make your account look a lot more agile/reactive, and raise brand awareness. So think ahead when planning social.

Jump in on relevant topics

If your Twitter account is used for business purposes, getting involved with trends that are relevant to your company can make a huge difference in growing your following and building a social business and community. If you are running a Twitter account on behalf of a coffee shop, for example, look out for relevant trends such as #internationalcoffeeday (October 1st) where you can engage with others using the trending hashtag to (subtly) promote your brand.
