Troubleshooting Instagram connection issues

Instagram connections can be prone to errors due to the way that the API works. If you are having trouble connecting your Instagram account to ContentCal, here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem.

If you are encountering an error message when trying to connect your Instagram account to ContentCal, we advise completing all of the following 4 steps to troubleshoot the problem. Skip to the bottom of the page for a video walkthrough.

1. Check you have Admin access to the Facebook Page

  • Head to your Facebook Page
  • Go to 'Settings'
  • Go to 'Page Roles'
  • Check that your role is listed as 'Admin' - you will not be able to publish content with any other role

2. Review the Instagram account connection on Facebook

  • Head to your Facebook Page
  • Go to 'Settings'
  • Go to 'Instagram'
  • If you see the 'Review Account Connection' message, select 'Review Connection' and then follow the on-screen prompts.

Please note, due to an update from Instagram, you must be an Admin of a Facebook Business Page for a full week before you are able to connect an Instagram Business Page to the Facebook Page. If you have recently been added as an Admin, you will need to either wait until a week has passed or ask a colleague who has been an Admin longer than a week to add the Instagram account to the Facebook Page instead.

3. Review the Instagram account and Facebook connection on the Instagram Mobile App

  • Open the Instagram mobile app
  • Navigate to 'Edit Profile'
  • In the 'Public Business Information section, click 'Page'
  • From here, double-check the Instagram page is connected to the correct Facebook page. If not, you will need to connect an existing Facebook Page or create a new Facebook Page
  • In some instances, you may see the 'Review Account Connection' banner in this area. If so, select the 'Review Connection' button and follow the prompts.

4. Verify your Instagram account is a business account

In order to automatically publish your Instagram content, your Instagram account must be a business account, and it must be connected to a Facebook Page.

  • Head to your Instagram account on the Instagram Mobile App
  • Go to 'Settings'
  • Head into 'Account' - if you don't have a business account, you'll see the option to 'Switch to a professional account'.

Please note, if you have a personal Instagram account that is connected to your Facebook account currently, it will need to be reconnected to your Facebook page after it has been converted to a business profile.

Note Callout Icon

Note: If your Instagram account is set as a 'Creator' account - posts will need to be published manually via the ContentCal mobile app

Once all four steps have been reviewed, please go back into ContentCal and re-connect the Instagram and Facebook account to your Calendar.
